Museeuw, in his 15th year, led his team to victory and praised his troubled teammate, Frank Vandenbroucke, for helping achieve the win. It looked like everything was going Quick-StepÕs way, with no fewer than five riders at the front of a 26-person group. For the first two assaults of the Koppenberg, Museeuw and others drove hard to weaken the opposition, stretching their advantage to nearly a minute. Mario Cipollini's wheel slipped, and his outburst disqualified him from the race. But it was TelekomÕs Andreas Klier who surprised everyone and claimed the first-ever Ghent victory by a German rider.
