Huge raucous crowds on the 17 steep climbs of the course make Flanders one of the great fan experiences in cycling and the narrow cobbled roads make it one of the toughest for the riders. Climbing the podium of the Tour of Flanders marks a rider as one of the strongest and savviest in the peloton.

This year, a super-strong Belgian rider on the Quick Step team dominated the Tour of Flanders with an awe-inspiring demonstration of solo power, and we're not talking about Tom Boonen. National champion Stijn Devolder pulled out a Solo victory over his more famous rivals on a cold wet day to put his name among those of the greats in the history of the race. When Devolder went off on his own, the classics stars started chasing. 2007 winner Alessandro Ballan (Lampre) recovered from a crash to get into the chasing group and both Juan Antonio Flecha (Rabobank) and Nick Nuyens (Cofidis) made last ditch efforts, but it was two-time winner Tom Boonen’s turn to play loyal teammate and Devolder held on to give the fans the rare treat of the tricolor Belgian national champions jersey soloing down the Brusselsestraat to victory.
